A modern kitchen is built around clarity. Every element earns its place. There is no unnecessary detail, no decorative flourish for its own sake. The result is a space that feels calm, considered and effortless to live with. At The Kitchen & Bath Co, our modern kitchen range is designed for exactly this: homes where the kitchen is at the centre of daily life, and where that life deserves a backdrop that does not get in the way.

What defines a modern kitchen?

Modern kitchens are characterised by clean horizontal lines, flat or near-flat door profiles, and a restrained approach to colour and material. Cabinetry sits flush with the wall. Worktops meet splashbacks without interruption. Appliances are integrated behind matching door fronts so nothing disrupts the visual plane. The kitchen feels like a single cohesive object rather than a collection of separate units.

Handles are typically absent or minimal. J-pull profiles, push-to-open mechanisms or recessed rails keep the surface unbroken. This is not just aesthetic: handleless doors are significantly easier to wipe down, which matters in a room where cooking happens every day.

Materials and finishes

Matte lacquer is the finish most associated with modern kitchens: smooth, consistent and available in any colour from warm off-whites through to deep charcoals and navy blues. High gloss has become less fashionable over recent years, though it remains the right choice for certain interiors where light reflection is an advantage. Textured foil and wood-effect laminates offer a more tactile surface while keeping the clean silhouette intact.

Worktops in modern kitchens tend toward engineered stone, sintered surfaces or compact laminate. Natural granite and marble are still used, but engineered options offer greater consistency and lower maintenance. Quartz remains the most popular choice: hard-wearing, non-porous and available in a huge range of tones.

Layout and storage

Modern kitchens reward careful layout planning. Islands are common. They provide prep space, informal dining and storage while reinforcing the open-plan principle. Handleless base units with internal drawer systems replace the traditional mix of drawers and doors, making every corner accessible and organised. Larder-style tall units pull together appliances, pantry storage and integrated fridges into a single wall, keeping the kitchen uncluttered.

Good lighting is non-negotiable. Under-cabinet strips illuminate worktops directly. Recessed ceiling spots keep the ceiling clean. A single pendant or linear fixture over an island adds warmth without breaking the architectural feel.

How we work

The Kitchen & Bath Co designs and supplies modern kitchens to homes across the UK. We do not have showrooms. We work entirely by phone and video call, which keeps our overheads low and our prices competitive. You speak directly with a designer who listens to how you use your kitchen before making any suggestions. We produce detailed CAD drawings, agree a specification, and manufacture your kitchen to order.

Delivery is free to any mainland UK address, fully packaged and tracked. We do not fit: you arrange your own local fitter, which gives you full control over timing and cost. Most of our clients find a fitter through a recommendation or a local trade directory. If you are in an area where we know a reliable fitter, we are happy to make an introduction.

We supply kitchens at a price point that would typically only be available through a large national retailer, but with the design attention and lead times of an independent specialist. If you are considering a modern kitchen and would like to talk through your project, get in touch for a free, no-obligation consultation.
